Reports that I've received state similar to what's coming out of Butler High that Riley Ferguson has until Monday and will wait until Monday to sit down with Tennessee football coach Butch Jones. Sources tell me this is not due to disciplinary action as a result of a violation of team rules.*
Ferguson must decide if he wants to play at Tennessee. Jones wants players that want to be at Tennessee.
Ferguson must also understand that he must flat beat out his competition to be the Volunteers' starting quarterback. With the least amount of experience of the four, he must show that he can lead men and will teammates to play above their set of skills. He must also embrace the stress points of the job, which include a tremendous amount of work outside of the NCAA allowed, coach-led workload. Ferguson has been seen by IT getting in extra reps with pass-catchers post practice.*
Tennessee faces as tough or tougher competition as any program in the nation. That means facing numerous Sunday-bound defenders and several high-profile defensive coordinators and staffs. The work goes far beyond the physical side.*Vols quarterbacks must win the play at times pre-snap by having the proper play call and knowing where the football must go. Ferguson has plenty of quarterback talent to get this done, but he absolutely has to improve from the neck up.
