Denver — The air of quiet disappointment in the visiting clubhouse Sunday took on an added tone of sadness as word spread among the Braves that Ryan Langerhans had been traded. The slumping left fielder was traded to Oakland for cash of a player to be named, a deal announced after the Braves' 11-inning loss to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The Braves have recalled utility man Willie Harris, who was hitting .362 at Class AAA Richmond. "It kind of caught me totally off guard," said Langerhans, a gifted defensive outfielder who was batting just .068 after going 1-for-3 with a double and sacrifice fly Sunday — his first extra-base hit and first RBI of the season.

As bad as he's been at the plate, he should have been expecting an outright release instead of a trade. It's hard to believe that the Braves are going to end up with any sort of value in this deal.

The fact that he was traded to Oakland almost makes me wonder what I've missed. There's nothing in Langerhans's career that I can find, major or minor leagues, to suggest that he's going to hit much at all. Maybe it's because the A's are planning to play him in center. While he's obviously not really an .050 hitter, he's certainly still never going to give you the kind of bat you need from a left fielder -- but he might give you enough from CF. The Braves already have a CF, so there's no point in keeping him.

I assume this means that Francoeur is the heir apparent in center, if (as we all assume) Andruw ends up somewhere else?

That would be my guess, but at the same time, If Andruw isn't resigned it does free up some money to go get somebody. As well as the Kelly Johnson experiement seems to be going, I still think they'd like to bump everybody down a spot in the order and find a legit leadoff man.

they got two outfielders in the minors who could be the heir apparent to Andruw. Gregor Blanco and Brandon Jones

the new guy that got called up (harris) to play left just got his first hit...so that makes him about as successful in one game as langerhans was the whole season

Man, that surprises me. What do we know about Harris?

i dont know anything about him, i assumed diaz would take over full time duty in left but apparently not

Cox almost always likes to get someone who's new to the time in the lineup immediately. Whether he ends up in a full-on platoon with Diaz is, I guess, still up in the air.

apparently he came from the AL and played a few years with the ChiSox and one with the BoSox...his stats suggest he could potentially be a steal threat

Looks like he has a hit and a walk tonight.

I'm not familiar with him either. From Baseball Prospectus: "Willie Harris's speed off the bench provided decent utility for the World Champion White Sox in 2005, and while he had his uses as a pinch-runner with the Red Sox, their absence from the postseason prevented his turn as the next Dave Roberts. His apparent inability to hit makes him a 25th man at best; the Braves will consider using him for that spot in 2007." He's 28 years old, so he's not exactly a prospect, and his minor-league batting statistics are pretty ugly. Unfortunately, he's a left-handed hitter, which means Cox may very well be tempted to stick him into Langerhans's slot in the LF platoon. That would be a mistake.

Well that's not very exciting. :(

Yeah, I know. I was disappointed to read it, too.

Still, he sounds like a useful role player to have around, as long as Cox doesn't take ABs away from Diaz for him. I think at this point they've got to give Diaz a shot at the full-time job.

A walk and a hit -- in the same game!! -- is godlike production compared to what we've been getting from that spot so far.

Has there been anything regarding the PTBNL or Cash Considerations that Braves is supposed to get from A's yet?
