GWN's Fitness Thread

GWN I know you and Breazy are more avid runners for run sake than I am but, what type of training/lifting do you do?

Honestly I only run about twice a week right now, at about 5 miles per session. I lift weights in a somewhat conventional routine (push/pull method right now) 3 days a week, and I do a high intensity interval routine called TacFit twice a week. That is the program that we use for our basic training students for a good portion of their PT.

TacFit is a lot like Crossfit, but without the Olympic movements so much. It's supposed to be geared more toward law enforcement and tactical awareness, but a lot of people use it. There's about 6 protocols to follow, which include Every Minute On The Minute, As Fast As Possible, As Many Rounds As Possible, etc. All sessions are 20 minutes except the As Fast As Possible. Lots of kettlebell stuff, medicine ball, as well as mostly body weight exercises.

You looking for something new?

Definitely looking for something new, I always feel like I plateau frequently. I used a kinda sorta crossfit type regime for upper body for a while that lead me to try to get back on the bench press to see if I'd made any progress and I was lifting personal bests. Fell in love with the bench bc of how much I was pushing up and then slowly digressed back to average for me and it really pissed me off.

Doing heavy weight on big movements like that is tough to maintain, much less progress. You need to assemble a routine designed for absolute strength, as well as dial your nutrition in for a calorie surplus.

As I mentioned the other day, my nutrition is something I'm trying to focus back in on but as far as routines/exercises go, I'd love some specific recommendations.

LOL, ok wait...so do you want to go back to increasing your bench and other compound lifts like that, or do you want to try to shed body fat and cut up?

Yeah, sorry, that probably didn't make a lot of sense. What I was trying to get across is that I am over my short lived fascination with my increased bench numbers and want to learn/focus on more body weight, kettle bell type routines like you mentioned.

Either of you tabata subscribers? I try to knock out a few rounds in the AM to get the heart rate up, and go to more traditional lifts in the evening.

I like the flexibility of tabata.

Yeah, as I explained to wU over at the mothership, too much whiskey while trying to post last night. Confused myself reading that exchange again this morning.

One of the protocols of TacFit is just like Tabata. I really like it.

Honestly, my favorite is As Fast As Possible.

OK, makes more sense now.

I have the entire TacFit protocol in iBooks, and I can probably email it to you if you're interested in checking it out. All the exercises are described in depth with pics, and you can probably find vids on them as well.

I honestly like coming up with my own routines, and I can post some of those up for you to check out if you like. Most of them are As Fast As Possible, or Every Minute on the Minute.

I'd definitely be interested in some of your routines.

I'm pretty bored with the push-ups, jumping jacks, curls (resistance band/cord style), planks, bench, wall sits, body weight squats, etc. if you've got some fresher/better/different material

I'm in, I'll take anything you got. Like you, I usually like to take somebody else's routine and tweak it towards my own personal preferences but it'd be awesome to have a good starting point.

Even though that's not in actual email format, let me know when you see this one so I can edit it out. I don't think they could do anything with it but with all of our spam bot friends around here, I'd prefer not to put it the test.
