Smoltz agree on contract extension

Looks like Smoltz is going to be one of the rare players that is able to play his entire career with one team.

The only downside to this is that, given the current miserable ownership situation, it almost certainly kills any chance that Andruw will be back. But hey, I don't care. He' probably won't be worth it would have cost to keep him anyway.

I used to think they ought to retire 31, 47, and 29 at the same time. Now I'm thinking that Smoltz deserves his own night.

Smoltz signs contract extension

The Braves have seen an exodus of big-name players in recent years, but the cornerstone of the organization is staying. John Smoltz, the only player who has been on each of the 14 division-title teams, signed a contract extension Thursday that will keep him in a Braves uniform through 2008, with options for 2009 and 2010. Smoltz, 39, will make $14 million in 2008. There's a vesting option for 2009 worth about $12 million, which will kick in if Smoltz pitches 200 innings next season. The club has an option for 2010 which would pay Smoltz $13 million if he pitches 200 innings in 2009, $12 million if he does not.
