New York — When Brian McCann hopped from the batter's box Sunday, clutching his left hand and grimacing in pain after being struck by a pitch, Braves Nation held its collective breath. And manager Bobby Cox held his. "He better be OK, let's put it that way," Cox said immediately after the 9-6 win against the Mets and before he got the X-ray report on his All-Star catcher.

Would have been a lot cooler if the next couple of sentences had been included in the preview of the article .
He heard the news a few minutes later: X-rays negative. McCann has a bruised left ring finger and could be back in the lineup for today's series opener at Florida.
I held my breath as I clicked the link.

"scare" is usually good news. I'm glad he's ok.

That was gruesome looking when it happened. It's amazing that he didn't at least break a finger.

He was bunting improperly I thought. When I played baseball, we were taught to keep your fingers behind the bat. Well his were out front and the ball hit them.

It was the dreaded "Guy squares to bunt and gets one so far inside that he gets hit in the top hand that he slid up the bat".

It took a lot of guts to stay in the game, especially at the end of that at-bat when, after getting hit, he still lays down a great bunt.
