Smoltz gets early runs, timely relief
Smoltz gets early runs, timely relief
Washington -- The Braves offense gave John Smoltz some rare run support Tuesday night against the Nationals, and the bullpen gave him the kind of back-end effort that's become less and less rare this year. After Smoltz had suddenly run himself ragged in the sixth and seventh innings, the bullpen retired nine of the last 11 batters to secure a 6-4 win. This was a game the Braves lost for Smoltz last week -- 2-0 to the Nationals -- and many a time last year, when the bullpen blew six of his starts. But Tuesday he walked off with his second win of the year and the Braves got a 1-1 split in this short series.
