Miami — Desperate times call for desperate measures, and the Braves took what appeared to be a step in that direction by deciding to start John Smoltz tonight on short rest. Having lost eight of 11 games to fall seven games behind National League East leader New York and four games behind wild-card leader San Diego before Monday, the Braves know it's time to do whatever it takes. They will start Smoltz tonight against Florida on three days' rest, swapping rotation spots between him and Buddy Carlyle, who had been scheduled to start.
