Philadelphia — It's been a magical rookie season for Yunel Escobar, but he and the Braves got a reminder Friday night of what a cruel game baseball can be. After his throwing error let in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning, Escobar grounded out with a runner at third for the final out of an unusual 5-4 series-opening loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The Braves left the potential tying run in scoring position in each of the last two innings of a defeat that dropped them to third place in the National League East, 3 1/2 games behind New York and a half-game behind the Phillies.
