Smoltz, McCann are all-stars

Miami — The fans may not have thought much of Brian McCann's first half. The players in the National League did. Both McCann and John Smoltz were named to the All-Star team Sunday, both of them elected on the players' ballot. Shortstop Edgar Renteria, who may well have been the club's MVP over the first half, was not selected. Smoltz, who received the fourth-most votes on the players' ballot, is an All-Star for the eighth time in his 19-year career, but the second time since he returned to a starting role two years ago. McCann made the roster for the second season in a row.
