Birmingham — Tuesdays and Thursdays are the cut and paste days at the Andrews Sports Medicine Clinic inside St. Vincent's Hospital. It's when Dr. James Andrews slips into his pale green surgical gown and white rubber boots and goes all Michelangelo on the shredded ligaments and torn rotator cuffs of the world's broken athletes. Those two days represent but a fraction of his practice. The famous hinges he repairs twice a week make headlines. Beneath them is a long, serpentine story of a driven surgeon and his mission.
