The Braves scratched John Smoltz from Sunday's start vs. Chicago due to shoulder soreness and put Lance Cormier on the disabled list with what was called a "dead arm." Buddy Carlyle was recalled from Class AAA Richmond to start Sunday's series finale against the Cubs, and Smoltz is tentatively scheduled to start on Friday at Cleveland in what would have been his next turn in the rotation. Cormier was rocked for five runs, six walks and four homers in 32/3 innings of Friday's 9-1 loss to the Cubs, including three homers by Alfonso Soriano in his only at-bats against the right-hander.
