That news tempered the otherwise upbeat mood of the Braves, who got Chipper Jones back in the lineup and learned that John Smoltz will make his scheduled start Saturday at Boston. Smoltz made his decision after a pain-free bullpen session Wednesday, just two days after dislocating his right pinky. First, the troubling news: The Braves placed Gonzalez on the DL and sent him back to Atlanta to be examined by an orthopedist and undergo another MRI exam — presumably on his elbow but perhaps on his entire arm. The Braves wouldn't disclose those details.
