San Diego — Eighty-seven games into the season, Andruw Jones found at least a temporary salve for the mother of all slumps. A visit to Petco Park, where the Braves center fielder always crushes balls, slump or no slump. Jones had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run homer, as the Braves and surprising pitcher Buddy Carlyle beat the San Diego Padres 7-4 Friday night in the opener of their final series before the All-Star break. The Braves have won eight of their past 11 games and are only two games behind NL East leader New York, after the skidding Mets lost again Friday.

The Mets have really blown a great opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the Braves. I think it's time to lump the Mets in with all the other average teams in the NL. If they were as good as advertised, the least would be at least 7-10 games right now.

So . . . this is what it looks like when everybody deserts a website.

The NL Wild Card is going to be a mess in September. With all these teams hovering just above .500, it could be a 6 or 7 teams race.

At least it's exciting. :D
